Description
The Ciênsação Probability Lab consists of a robust dark bag with 15 dice in 3 clearly distinguishable colors. As simple as this combination may seem, we could not find anything comparable for simple hands-on experiments in maths on the market – and therefore developed this teaching tool.
The opening of the opaque black bag has just the right size to draw dices without 'peeking', an important detail for urn experiments when exploring probability. By filling the bag with a greater or smaller number of dice of the 3 colors, you can model a wide variety of problems, e.g.:
- What is the probability of drawing a red, yellow or blue die?
- Does the probability change for a second draw, if the first dice is placed back into the bag – or not?
- What is the probability of drawing a specific sequence, e.g. a red die followed by a blue one?
- If I only draw dice of one color, when can I conclude that there are only dice of this color in the bag? With what degree of confidence?
- If I press my index finger on one side of the die when drawing it, with which probability will my finger be on a 6 of a red dice (Bayesian probability)?
- ... and many more.
Obviously, you can use the dice also in other experiments and math games. Some suggestions can be found under the tab "Experiments".
Experiments
Let your students explore the law of radioactive decay by rolling the dice.
A simple dice game to exercise mental arithmetic, e.g. if you have to stand in for a colleague in a cover lesson.
Humans have a very bad sense for statistics. This activity helps to gain at least a basic idea of probability distributions, the importance of sample sizes and how statistical results should and should not be interpreted.
A simple game to hone multiplication skills, which teaches an important lesson about maths, namely that with some operations – like a simple multiplication – information can be lost.

Sets
For your information, these are the prices of a single Probability Lab in different sets:
Personal |
2.680€ |
Small Class Set |
1.915€ |
Regular Class Set |
1.665€ |
In case you prefer a different set size, you can order multiple personal sets – if the overall size exceeds the limits for small or regular class sets, the unit price is automatically adjusted. Please avoid combining different set sizes of the same product, since the system will not be able to adjust unit prices accordingly.
Our primary goal is to put science into the hands of school kids. These prices are therefore optimized for class sets, assuming a regular class size of up to 32 students. For most urn experiments, students can work in groups of up to 5 or 6 students, drawing one after the other. Ciênsação experiments and maths games with dice require up to 5 dice, so that one Probability Lab provides enough dice for 3 groups. In order to cover all these possibilities, the regular class set contains 6 Probability Labs.
By paying a bit more for a personal set, you help us to offer class sets at a low price.
